Corsica, April 2026 −  Travels −  Captain Tom

Corsica, April 2026

Back to Corsica again after 2022.

We’re off to an early start in mid-April. It’s still quite chilly, especially in the morning. But we have bright sunshine almost the entire time, and it only rains once during the night.

We’re on the road again with Marcellus from Extreme Tours. We are a group of 10 riders in total. We split into two groups, and we run into Klaus — who’s riding solo — every now and then along the route.

As always, there are many animals on the road — especially pigs, goats, cows, and horses, and occasionally donkeys. But above all, there are endless turns and magnificent scenery ranging from sea level to 1,400 meters up in the mountains.

There were two minor issues, but they were quickly resolved. More on that in the report below.

Overall, it was a very successful and beautiful tour to kick off the motorcycle season.

1The participants

We are a group of ten older gentlemen from Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.

Horst, Marcellus, Beat, Michi, Hans, Jörg (Stocki), Thomas, Tom, Karl, Klaus

3Getting There

The trip there is quite a hassle. Thomas and I are coming from Berlin. It’s a 1,200-kilometer drive to Savona to catch the ferry. Karl and Hans are coming from Styria in Austria, the rest of the Germans are coming from southern and western Germany, and Beat get picked up along the way in Switzerland.
We’re driving a van with two motorcycles inside. Karl and Hans are doing the same. Marcellus is towing a trailer with five motorcycles from Munich, and Michi and Horst are driving there from there. Only Stocki is traveling under his own power.

4Bastia–Calvi

The ferry arrives early in the morning. First, we have breakfast in Bastia, and then we head north along the coast. Right at the first viewpoint, we discover a mechanical problem, and Thomas and Marcellus have to go back to Bastia to the BMW service center. Everyone else continues on to Cap Corse, circles the tip of the peninsula, and then heads — mostly along the coast — to Calvi in the far northwest.

5Calvi South Loop

Today we went on a beautiful ride from Calvi into the northern hinterland. We had perfect weather, met some very friendly French people, encountered surprisingly good roads on the Bocca di a Battaglia and the Col de Vergio, and enjoyed great views of the Calanques de Piana and the Plage d'Arone. On the way up to the Col de Vergio, we ran into three locals and rode up to the pass together in perfect harmony.

6Calvi-Zonza

Today we traveled from Calvi in the north to Zonza in the south. We started by driving along the coast and then headed into the mountains over a few high passes. The well-known D69 was empty and in good condition, but covered in a lot of dirt. That made the whole trip a bit of a struggle. But the weather was still great, the people were friendly, and the food was good.

7Zonza Western Loop

Today we took a beautiful western loop from Zonza to the west coast near the island’s capital, Ajaccio. Great mountain passes and scenery, lots of pigs. But the main adventure of the day was that I had underestimated the distance to the next fuel station and ran out of gas. While Michi was already on his way to the fuel station, the second group with Marcellus came to my rescue by transferring gas from tank to tank. Then we continued on to the fuel station 26 kilometers away. There, I filled my 17-liter tank with 17.4 liters of gas.
After a few not-so-great coastal roads, we treated ourselves to the D420 with the Col de Saint-Eustache and the Col de la Tana to wrap up the day. Super well-maintained, fast, and at the same time very twisty. Plus, magnificent views.

8Zonza Southwestern Loop

Today we’re splitting into three groups. Thomas and Klaus are planning to change tires in Porto Vecchio, so they’re taking a shortcut. The others are taking a southwestern loop over to the west coast and then along the south coast. The main destination was Bonifacio, with its fortress built on sandstone cliffs.
Before that, under nearly blue skies, we took the D420 again, passing the Col de Tana and Col de Saint-Eustache. Later, there were quite a few fast roads, and then we reached Bonifacio. By then, the sky had already clouded over, and on the way back through the mountains, it got quite chilly. We managed to avoid the rain, though.

9Zonza–Bastia

Today is already the last day of the tour. We’re heading back from Zonza to Bastia. First thing in the morning, we’ll cross the Col de Bavella in sunny but chilly weather (6 degrees Celsius) with a breeze. Then we’ll head down to the coast, through some smaller hills near the east coast, and then back inland to the Asco Valley. There, we’ll climb back up to 1,400 meters. Our final destination is Bastia, where we’ll have dinner together and then board the ferry.

10The Journey Home

The drive home is once again very tedious. We drive the entire way without stopping. We take turns driving and are back in Berlin after 13 hours. That was exhausting.
