Kenya, December 2013 − Travels − Captain Tom

Kenya, December 2013

This year Christmas travel was Kenya. The promise is sun, palm trees, warm Indian Ocean with white banks but also Kilimandjaro (although located in Tanzania) and many wild animals within the reserves of Africa. The price to pay is a long journey.

I have broken down the report in five chapters

  • The Journey
  • The Hotel
  • The Safari
  • The Kilimandjaro
  • The Wildlife
1 The Journey

Die Journey is quite exhausting

  • 1 hour flight Berlin-Frankfurt
  • 3 hours waiting in Frankfurt
  • 8 hours over night flight Frankfurt-Nairobi
  • 1 hour waiting in Nairobi
  • 1 hour flight Nairobi-Mombasa
  • 2 hours bus transfer from Mombasa airport to the hotel at the Indian Ocean in Diani Beach

The journey back is without the stop in Nairobi but they pick you up at the hotel 5 hours before departure of the flight.

Mombasa very busy with much traffic

2 The Hotel

The hotel sits within a nice green garden with pool and direct access to the white beach of Diani Beach. There is a smooth breeze coming from the water and palm trees provide shade. Gangs of wild monkeys go around and entertain guests. The hotel sits within a nice green garden with pool and direct access to the white beach of Diani Beach. 3 The Safari

Sunset in Tsavo East
We went on a four day safari over more than 600 miles cross country. We had a little mini bus and driver Ronald knew where to go. The first day's destination was Voi Safari Lodge in Tsavo East National Park. We passed Buchuma Gate and arrived at a stunning location. The lodge is on top of a volcanic hill with a view to the Tsavo flats and two water holes in front of the hill.
Voi Safari Lodge
In the afternoon we had another game drive. Early breakfast the next morning and then game drive through Tsavo East towards Amboseli National Park. We went through Eremito Gate into Amboseli to Oltukai Lodge - a very luxurious place. The lodge is in the middle of Amboseli flats and presents a view to Kilimandjaro. Next morning we do a game drive first and have breakfast afterwards. Then we proceed through Amboseli to Kimana Gate. Then we go - always Kilimandjaro on the right hand side - eastbound.
We have a stop at Shetani Lava Flow.
We go through Chyulu Gate into Tsavo West National park and proceed to Severin Safari Camp. Again very luxurious. The rooms are tents but with all the comfort you can think of. The tents give you a feeling of being close to the wildlife - which is the case. There is no fence around the camp and you need a guard to get to your tent in the dark. In the afternoon we have a game drive towards Mzima Springs which provide fresh water to Mombasa Next day we proceed through Tsavo West, have lunch in Voi, pass Mombasa in the afternoon and arrive back to the hotel in the evening.

4 The Kilimandjaro

Kilimandjaro with Elephants
Kilimandjaro is a magnificent piece of nature. The highest peak of Africa, 19,341 ft high and with a snow covered summit. The mountain is located in Tanzania but you can see it quite well from Amboseli and Tsavo West. The summit is above the clouds and it looks like it is floating there like a cloud. Very impressing.
